Rooney Mara “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Talks Movie With Vogue November 2011

Rooney Mara “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Talks Movie With Vogue November 2011. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was written by the late Stieg Larsson, and was made into a film in Sweden in 2009. The film is part of a trilogy and other films are titled “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.” Larsson died in 2004 and his death reveal three unpublished novels which made up the trilogy. Larsson at the age of 15 had witnessed a gang rape of a young girl whose name was Lisbeth (the same name of the woman in the film) and he never forgave himself for not helping.

Rooney Mara plays Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and Daniel Craig will play Mikael Blomkvist in the film. Both are hired to find out who murdered a young lady from a small town. The man who hires them is a relative of the murdered lady and believes someone in their close but dysfunctional family is responsible for the murder. If you have not seen the original movie I urge you to see it prior to watching the American version.

Mara compares herself to Noomi Rapace, Swedish actresses who played Lisbeth Salander in the original film, role as states, “One of the things that make our version that much more heartbreaking, is that even though I am playing a 24-year-old, I look much younger. I look like a child.” Mara enjoyed the past year of playing this role because it allowed her to dress in whatever clothing she wanted, “Before, I dressed much girlier. A lot of blush-colored things. Now I literally roll out of bed and put on whatever is there. I have really enjoyed being a boy this last year.”

Mara is known to be a loner herself and she believes that had helped her relate and play the character better, “I am very slow to warm. I’ve always been sort of a loner. I didn’t play team sports. I am better one-on-one than in big groups. I can understand wanting to be invisible and mistrusting people and wanting to understand everything before you engage with the world.”

During the interview Mara also talks about how she hates the rumors of her being a trust fund baby and that is not true at all. She explains, “I don’t have a trust fund. I grew up in a little cul-de-sac in the suburbs and went to public school. I went to Costco on the weekends. When my great-grandfathers founded those teams it cost, like, $500. My dad is one of eleven children. I am one of 40 grandchildren. What bothers me about the whole trust-fund thing is that it sort of presumes that everything is handed to you. And if there is one thing about my family that I do identify with, it is that everyone is extremely hardworking. Also, the people whom I grew up with all did things they really loved. And I think that’s an important lesson.” People think that she is a trust fund baby due to her great-grandfathers are the ones who had founded the NFL franchises of the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mara is also very grateful for having the opportunity to play such an intense and amazing role, but she is not looking forward to all the media attention she will be receiving once the film hits theaters, “That kind of fame is not something I ever wanted for myself. It just so happens that this huge, gigantic monster of a film came around that also happens to have the most incredible character that I ever could have dreamed up. But my fear with a movie like this is the kind of exposure you get from it. I think that can be death to an actor. The more people know about you, the less they can project who you are supposed to be. It’s unfortunate that you really only get one shot at that. After this, I won’t be able to be that girl again.”
