Kevin Sorbo struggled with a series of strokes.
Actor Kevin Sorbo, the star of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Andromeda, revealed a secret he has been keeping from fans for almost 15 years. The actor suffered a series of strokes while shooting the show, which aired in syndication from 1994-1999. Sorbo’s health problems began in the summer of 1997 while he was filming Hercules. He went to several doctors while on a publicity tour after he began feeling pain, aching, tingling and cold sensations in his left arm and hand (pre-stroke symptoms).
“I had several doctors on my publicity tour check me out, but they didn’t believe it was anything serious. I even had what seemed like a rational explanation, having recently injured my ulnar nerve — the funny bone.”-Kevin Sorbo revealed.
Doctors soon discovered he had an aneurysm in an artery near his shoulder, which disrupted the blood flow to his lower arm.
“Apparently, the aneurysm has been producing blood clots for some time. I had blockages all down my arm that were making my fingers cold, tingly and numb.”-the famous “Hercules” added.
Kevin Sorbo, 52, underwent a surgical procedure whereby an angiogram tube was used to insert platinum coils around the aneurysm. After the procedure, the actor learned he had suffered three distinct strokes, but the cause remains unknown.
“My illness made me special in a way that I never wanted nor expected. I’m not Hercules; I’m a mere mortal with human limitations and problems. But I am determined to not behave like a victim anymore.”-he told NN.
The strokes are history now, Kevin Sorbo has regained his health, except for occasional residual arm pain and a 10-percent blind spot with his vision. The “Hercules” star most recently starred in the film “Soul Surfer” and is working on a TV pilot at the moment.
