Sly Stone Is Homeless & Lives Out Of A Camper Van. Sly Stone, real name Sylvester Stewart, was the frontman for the Sly and the Family Stone, has definitely seen better days. Stone told the New York Post, “I like my small camper. I just don’t want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving.” Stone is a funk and soul legend who is better known for his hit songs “Everyday People” and “Family Affair.”
He now lives in a white camper van that is parked in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Los Angeles the Crenshaw neighborhood. About four years ago this soul legend use to live in a grand mansion in the Napa Valley that featured a vineyard and multiple cars could be seen in the front of the home. Stone has struggled with drug addiction like many other artists including Britney Spears Illegal Drug Prescription Scandal, as well as he struggled with money mismanagement and a lavish spending habit. He would spend tens of thousands of dollars on fancy cars and motorcycles. Stone would even give those expensive cars as gifts to his friends.
Stone has been arrested several times in the 1980s for cocaine possession and in 1987 was the last time he performed for 19 years. He then made a very weird appearance to perform in 2006 during a Grammys tribute in which he walked off the stage during mid song. In 2009, Stone then sued his manager for fraud and asked for $50 million in damages and stolen royalty payments. Stone also believes that he went poor because of how his manager stole money from him.
Even though Stone has no home nor job he still continues to make music via his laptop in his camper van. He tells the New York Post, “My music is a format that will encourage you to have a song you won’t forget. That’s why I got so much money, that there are so many people around, and that’s why I am in court. Millions of dollars!”
He continues, “But now please tell everybody, please, to give me a job, play my music. I’m tired of all this sh**, man. I see all the guys playing those old songs. Let these guys know, like Lady Gaga, let me come in, just let me come in and pay me if you like it.”
It sounds like from the last few statements that he is truly unhappy with his living situation. Even though in the beginning he stated “I like my small camper.” There is no way a person who lived a very lavish lifestyle could be happy in a white camper van. Hopefully he has laid off the drugs and someone will take a chance on him.
